can anyone explain to me in detail the reaction between oxygen and oil?
I know that oxygen and oil can react violently, what I don’t understand is why. What causes it. For instance, using an oil based lubricant on the threads of an oxygen cylinder would be very dangerous, but why? What about the combination causes the reaction.
Any organic material contains carbon and hydrogen, which react with oxygen…
—(CH2)n— + nO2 —> nCO2 + nH2O
Under ‘normal’ conditions, this can be a dangerous combo, but requires a ’starter’ energy to effect combustion. But the O2 under the high pressure in a cylinder readily self-oxidizes the (CH2) and can lead to an explosion.
